Known as Russian Boar, Wild Boar, Feral Hog or just plain Pigs, the wild swine in Texas are rapidly gaining popularity as a hunting target. The reasons are numerous. Number one; they’re smart, so the hunting can be challenging! One scientific study says that pigs are the second smartest animal behind only chimpanzees. Number two; you may take hog by any method, year around in Texas. That means; no need to wait for deer season to warm up the gun barrel. Number three; wild pork is excellent meat; lean, and flavorful! And, number four; boar hunting is FUN!

We would like to invite you to come wild boar hog hunting with us here at hunting-in-texas.com We can offer you many different packages; rustic, moderate or full service luxury. We have many pigs. Some are nearly pure Russian Boar, some pure Feral Hogs, and there are lots and lots of crossed pigs!
Seeing herds of 20-50 feral hogs at a time is not uncommon on our ranches. Sows sexually mature at just 9 months old and can have a litter of piglets every 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days thereafter. There may be up to 8 shoats raised from each litter. Boars mature at about 1 year old. Boars get a thick cartilage like shield under the skin all around the chest cavity. This is to protect them from the tusks of other boars in fights over females, and also from the bullets and arrows used while hog hunting in Texas. Check out the tusks on these boar hogs, and remember it the next time you have to track a wounded one into thick cover. Despite the shield, I have killed big ones up to 200 pounds with just a .22 rimfire. You MUST put the round right in the ear canal to get it down though. Small, fast, centerfire cartridges, like my 85 grain hollow point .243, will also drop them like a stone when placed where the head and neck join, BUT, if you are not that great of a shot and must body shoot these critters, use all the gun you can handle and use deep penetrating bullets. Don’t expect a blood trail. Exit wounds are almost unheard of on big specimens, even with magnum loads and deep penetrating bullets. The shield and all the fat these things get also tends to seal what hole you do make. In other words, THE HEAD/NECK SHOT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED REGARDLESS WHAT GUN OR BULLET YOU ARE USING.
